Contagious Interview is a North Korea-linked threat activity cluster associated with the Lazarus ecosystem and widely tracked under aliases including Famous Chollima, WaterPlum, PurpleBravo, Nickel Tapestry, Storm-1877, UNC5267, Void Dokkaebi, Wagemole, Tenacious Pungsan, DeceptiveDevelopment, and DPRK IT worker activity. The cluster combines fake job and contractor recruitment, remote IT worker infiltration, software supply-chain compromise, and malware delivery to obtain long-term access, steal data and credentials, target cryptocurrency assets, and generate revenue for the DPRK. A defining tradecraft pattern is social engineering through bogus interviews, hiring platforms, recruiter outreach, and collaboration requests on professional and developer platforms. Victims are lured into downloading malware disguised as interview software, troubleshooting tools, or development projects. The actor has also operated remote-worker schemes in which operatives use forged or stolen identities to secure employment at foreign companies, then establish persistent remote access and gain trusted insider access to source code, internal communications, and deployment pipelines. Contagious Interview has repeatedly targeted software developers, cryptocurrency and blockchain organizations, financial institutions, FinTech companies, and related trading or marketing roles. Observed campaigns also expanded beyond developers into retail-linked and ecommerce-themed lures. The actor has shown particular interest in cryptocurrency wallets, browser-stored credentials, session material, and sensitive corporate data. Malware and tooling associated with the cluster include BeaverTail, InvisibleFerret, OtterCookie, Tsunami, OmniStealer, and DEV#POPPER-style JavaScript RATs. These toolsets support cross-platform operations against Windows, macOS, and Linux. Reported capabilities include host reconnaissance, credential theft from browsers, session and cookie theft, clipboard theft, keylogging, secret file theft, remote command execution, persistence through startup and autostart mechanisms, remote desktop enablement, defense evasion through environment and virtual-machine checks, and exfiltration of documents, images, wallet data, and other targeted files. Some campaigns also deployed cryptominers and botnet-oriented components. The actor has demonstrated notable adaptability in delivery and command-and-control methods. Beyond conventional web and repository-based staging, campaigns have used malicious npm packages, trojanized GitHub projects, ClickFix-style lures, compiled payloads for less technical victims, and blockchain-based payload retrieval and command-and-control techniques spanning multiple public chains. Reporting also indicates continued malware development, modularization, and operational experimentation across 2024-2026. Contagious Interview overlaps with broader DPRK revenue-generation operations rather than purely traditional espionage. Its activity supports illicit income generation through fraudulent employment, cryptocurrency theft, data theft, and related compromise of private-sector organizations worldwide.
