GhostSec is an Anonymous-derived hacktivist collective that has also operated financially motivated ransomware campaigns. Its activities have included targeting Islamic extremist websites and online content, DDoS attacks, data theft, and disruptive intrusions into industrial control and satellite-related systems. It has targeted organizations or devices in Israel, Russia, Belarus, Iran, and Cuba. Its operational interests include water infrastructure, programmable logic controllers, industrial routers, GNSS receivers, and satellite communications. CtrlSec is a closely related counter-extremism group that has shared personnel and resources with GhostSec, rather than a separate alias. GhostSec released GhostLocker ransomware in October 2023 and collaborated with Stormous on double-extortion attacks across multiple countries and business sectors. The groups developed the joint StmX|GhostLocker ransomware-as-a-service program and participated in The Five Families coalition alongside ThreatSec, BlackForums, and SiegedSec. In May 2024, GhostSec announced its departure from ransomware operations and a return to hacktivism, transferring GhostLocker operations to Stormous. GhostSec's techniques include exploitation of exposed applications, system and file discovery, collection and exfiltration of confidential information, data encryption, and inhibition of recovery. It targeted the Metabase information disclosure vulnerability CVE-2021-41277 in May 2024. Its post-compromise techniques include bootkit-based persistence, process injection, obfuscation, artifact masquerading, and timestamp manipulation. The group has also targeted Unitronics PLCs and Aegis water-control devices and conducted campaigns against GNSS receivers.
