CVE-2025-53690 is a critical deserialization of untrusted data vulnerability in Sitecore Experience Manager (XM) and Sitecore Experience Platform (XP) through version 9.0, with reporting also indicating exposure in Experience Commerce and certain Managed Cloud deployments when configured with legacy sample cryptographic material. The flaw is associated with ASP.NET ViewState handling: if a deployment uses a default, sample, or otherwise exposed machineKey, an attacker can forge a malicious ViewState payload that the application will accept as valid and deserialize. Because the deserialized data can contain attacker-controlled .NET objects, successful exploitation can trigger arbitrary code execution in the Sitecore web application context. Reporting also notes exploitation against public-facing Sitecore endpoints, including blocked.aspx, using crafted HTTP POST requests carrying malicious ViewState data. The issue has been observed in the wild as a zero-day and is widely characterized as pre-authentication remote code execution in affected internet-facing deployments.
