CVE-2024-37085 is an authentication bypass vulnerability in Active Directory-integrated VMware ESXi. ESXi identifies a privileged domain group by name rather than security identifier and automatically grants its members full hypervisor administrative access. Attackers with sufficient Active Directory group-management permissions can exploit this behavior by creating or recreating the designated group and adding an attacker-controlled account, or by renaming an existing group. The default group name is inconsistently documented as "ESX Admins" or "ESXi Admins." Exploitation has enabled ransomware deployment, hypervisor filesystem encryption, and disruption of hosted virtual machines.
