CVE-2023-34048 is a critical out-of-bounds write vulnerability in VMware vCenter Server’s implementation of the DCERPC protocol. The flaw affects vCenter Server 7.0 and 8.0 and can be triggered by a malicious actor that can reach the vulnerable service over the network. By sending crafted DCERPC traffic, an attacker can cause memory corruption through an out-of-bounds write condition, which may result in remote code execution on the vCenter Server. The vulnerability has been associated with crashes of the vmdird service during exploitation and has been reported as exploited in the wild, including as a zero-day prior to public disclosure.
