CVE-2022-39952 is a critical vulnerability in Fortinet FortiNAC caused by external control of file name or path. It affects FortiNAC versions 9.4.0, 9.2.0 through 9.2.5, 9.1.0 through 9.1.7, 8.8.0 through 8.8.11, 8.7.0 through 8.7.6, 8.6.0 through 8.6.5, 8.5.0 through 8.5.4, and 8.3.7. According to Fortinet, the flaw may allow an unauthenticated attacker to execute unauthorized code or commands via a specifically crafted HTTP request. Supporting detection content indicates exploitation attempts target the URI path /configWizard/keyUpload.jsp and may involve uploading a payload.zip file, consistent with a remote code execution path on exposed FortiNAC systems.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade FortiNAC to a fixed version as directed by Fortinet's PSIRT advisory FG-IR-22-300. Fortinet states the vulnerability was remediated and fixes were published with the advisory issued on February 16, 2023. Organizations running affected versions should upgrade immediately and consult the Fortinet PSIRT advisory or Fortinet Support for exact fixed releases and upgrade guidance.
