CVE-2021-41379 is a Windows Installer elevation-of-privilege vulnerability that allows an attacker to delete files using elevated privileges. Microsoft released a security update on November 9, 2021, but subsequent research identified an incomplete fix and demonstrated local escalation to SYSTEM on patched Windows systems. The related proof of concept modifies the Microsoft Edge elevation service's discretionary access control list, replaces the service executable, and executes with elevated privileges. The original elevated file-deletion vulnerability should be distinguished from the more powerful exploitation demonstrated during investigation of its patch.

A Windows local privilege escalation vulnerability frequently used by Makop operators to obtain elevated/SYSTEM privileges.
A Windows Installer vulnerability originally allowing privileged file deletion. Investigation of Microsoft's incomplete patch revealed exploitation permitting SYSTEM-level privileges, including on Windows 11 and Windows Server 2022. Public proof-of-concept code overwrites the Microsoft Edge elevation service DACL, copies itself to the service location, and executes. The reference reports no fully effective official patch as of November 30, 2021; its December 3 update also warns that attackers can easily evade antivirus detection.
A Windows Installer-related vulnerability associated here with msi.dll hijacking/loading behavior that could enable arbitrary code execution, privilege escalation, or persistence.
