CVE-2021-33742 is a remote code execution vulnerability in Windows MSHTML, the rendering component used by Internet Explorer. It was exploited as a zero-day in targeted attacks associated with Candiru. An April 2021 campaign used malicious Microsoft Office documents that loaded Internet Explorer content through ActiveX objects or VBA macros, then delivered the exploit after fingerprinting targets. Exploitation does not require prior authentication or privileges on the vulnerable device. Microsoft patched the vulnerability in June 2021. The specific vulnerable function and underlying weakness are not established.
