CVE-2020-10148 is an authentication bypass vulnerability in the SolarWinds Orion API affecting Orion Platform 2019.4 HF 5, 2020.2 with no hotfix installed, and 2020.2 HF 1. The flaw allows a remote attacker to access the API without valid authentication and execute API commands against the Orion instance. Reported exploitation included abuse of the Orion API's ExecuteExternalProgram() capability to launch commands on the underlying server with the privileges of the SolarWinds service. In observed intrusions, this enabled installation of the SUPERNOVA web shell and follow-on credential theft activity. Successful exploitation can therefore turn an API authentication weakness into direct operating-system-level command execution on the Orion server.
