CVE-2017-0213 is a local elevation-of-privilege vulnerability in the Windows COM Aggregate Marshaler affecting multiple Microsoft Windows client and server releases, including Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8.1, Windows 10 through 1703, Windows Server 2008 SP2 and R2 SP1, Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2, Windows Server 2016, and Windows RT 8.1. The flaw allows an attacker to run a specially crafted application that abuses the COM Aggregate Marshaler to execute arbitrary code with elevated privileges. The issue is a post-compromise local privilege escalation rather than an initial remote access vector, and it has been widely used by threat actors and ransomware operators after obtaining code execution on a target system.
