Socelars is a Windows information-stealing Trojan focused on harvesting browser data, social-media session material, and payment-related information. It has been observed stealing Facebook session cookies from Chromium- and Firefox-based browsers, using those cookies to access Facebook account and Ads Manager resources, and extracting advertising account identifiers, access tokens, associated pages, balances, spending limits, and payment details. Reported variants also target Amazon session cookies, collect browser and host information, gather Instagram and Steam-related data, and in some cases deploy a malicious Chrome extension to further steal Facebook, credit-card, and other payment credentials. The malware typically operates silently in the background and exfiltrates collected data to attacker-controlled infrastructure.
Socelars has been associated with fake software and adware-bundled distribution, including trojanized installers and counterfeit utility applications such as bogus PDF tools. It has also been repeatedly observed as a payload delivered by PrivateLoader and in multi-malware bundling operations, including the Russian-speaking Operation STANDOFF campaign, where it was installed alongside other commodity stealers, loaders, miners, and access-enabling malware. Available reporting characterizes Socelars as part of the commodity cybercrime ecosystem rather than a bespoke intrusion platform, but its theft of session cookies and advertising-account data can enable account hijacking, fraudulent ad purchases, financial abuse, and follow-on compromise.
