SILENTTRINITY is a Windows-focused post-exploitation framework and command-and-control implant used after initial compromise to provide interactive access, host reconnaissance, privilege escalation, persistence, credential collection, and lateral movement. It has been observed deployed as a C2 stager immediately following server compromise, indicating use as a follow-on payload rather than a primary intrusion vector.
Its documented capabilities include executing commands through PowerShell, transferring files between infected hosts and command-and-control infrastructure, enumerating logged-on users, collecting domain user information, discovering network shares, querying and modifying Windows Registry settings, and checking for security software through service and WMI-related mechanisms. It can collect cleartext web credentials from Internet Explorer and Edge, monitor clipboard contents, and hide execution windows to reduce user visibility. SILENTTRINITY also includes modules for User Account Control bypass, including techniques involving Device Manager, Manage Optional Features, and .msc handler hijacking, as well as the ability to establish persistence by creating a new Windows service. For lateral movement, it can leverage WMI.
The framework is associated with post-compromise operations on Windows enterprise environments where operators seek stealthy execution, credential access, internal reconnaissance, and movement to additional systems.

Moreover, exploitation of a public-facing application was the root cause in 42.37% of cases investigated by the Kaspersky Global Emergency Response Team (GERT) in 2023. During the investigation of one case, we identified that the web server was patched a month after the attacker infiltrated the network.

Numerous malware families and threat groups are described as achieving persistence by adding values under Run/RunOnce/Policies\Explorer\Run Registry keys or by placing shortcuts/files in the Windows Startup folder.
Many entries describe creating .lnk shortcut files in the Startup folder, such as DarkGate creating a shortcut to itself as an LNK object in the victim startup folder and Operation Dream Job placing LNK files into victims' startup folders.
