ScatterBrain is a custom obfuscating compiler and loader used to protect generated malware binaries from static and dynamic analysis. It evolved from the ScatterBee obfuscation mechanism and incorporates multiple operational modes and protection components intended to impede security tooling and binary-analysis frameworks. ScatterBrain has been used to obfuscate ShadowPad, a modular cyberespionage backdoor, in intrusions affecting organizations in government, manufacturing, finance, telecommunications, research, and media sectors. ScatterBrain-obfuscated ShadowPad activity has been associated with China-nexus operations; Google Threat Intelligence Group has linked related use of ScatterBrain-obfuscated ShadowPad to clusters associated with APT41.

An obfuscation framework/technique used to hinder analysis and detection; here it is used to obfuscate a ShadowPad sample and is associated (per Google) with activity linked to APT41.
ScatterBrain is an obfuscation mechanism (evolved from ScatterBee) used to protect malware such as ShadowPad from detection and analysis. It alters control flow, uses dispatcher routines, and employs opaque predicates to hinder reverse engineering.
An obfuscation framework used to conceal payloads (here, ShadowPad), complicating static and dynamic analysis.
An obfuscation/protection layer used to conceal malware (noted here specifically in conjunction with ShadowPad).
