Imperial Kitten is an Iranian state-aligned espionage threat actor widely assessed to operate in support of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). It is also tracked as Tortoiseshell, Yellow Liderc, TA456, and Crimson Sandstorm. The group has targeted transportation, logistics, technology, telecommunications, maritime, energy, defense, consulting, and professional-services organizations, including Israeli transportation and logistics entities. Its operations support Iranian strategic intelligence collection and have shown rapid adaptation to regional conflict developments. Imperial Kitten uses spear-phishing and recruitment-themed social engineering to deliver custom implants and remote-access malware. It has also obtained access through compromised web services, drive-by compromise, exploitation of public-facing systems, SQL injection, scanning, and stolen VPN credentials. The group uses custom and publicly available tooling, including email-based command-and-control malware and a remote-access tool using Discord-based command and control. Observed post-compromise activity includes lateral movement, local data collection, process injection, startup-item persistence, security-software discovery, deobfuscation, and exfiltration over command-and-control channels. The actor has conducted strategic web-compromise activity and has compromised maritime platforms, including Automatic Identification System services and vessel CCTV systems, to collect location and surveillance information. It has also used conflict-themed phishing infrastructure and remote-access malware to collect information from visitors interested in pro-Israel material. Imperial Kitten's operational tempo and tasking have been associated with regional conflict flashpoints, consistent with an intelligence-collection role supporting Iranian interests.
