Five Families, also known as FiveFamilies and five_families, is a coalition of hacktivist and cybercriminal groups comprising ThreatSec, GhostSec, Stormous, BlackForums, and SiegedSec. The coalition was publicly identified by August 2023. Its members specialize in different activities, including organizational compromise, publication of sensitive data, ransomware, and community infrastructure and communications. BlackForums maintains a forum and redistributes information associated with the coalition. Five Families has targeted entities in Cuba and Brazil. Its constituent groups have additional targeting histories: GhostSec has attacked entities in Iran and Cuba; ThreatSec has targeted Russia and Genesys; Stormous has targeted European companies; and SiegedSec has published NATO Communities of Interest data and attacked US companies. These activities represent member-group operations rather than necessarily joint coalition campaigns. The collective combines hacktivist activity with ransomware-oriented cybercrime and has been associated with a transition toward ransomware-as-a-service. Its activities include sensitive-data exposure and extortion, but a single dominant motivation is not established.
