IPIDEA is a China-based malicious residential proxy operator that builds a large proxy network from compromised consumer devices and household internet connections. It has been described as one of the largest networks of its kind, reaching roughly 10 million IPs per day in 2026 after recovering from a major disruption earlier that year. The operation has relied on infected Android devices, Android TV boxes, IoT and SOHO routers, and other consumer hardware that are converted into proxy exit nodes for third-party traffic. IPIDEA has used multiple infection and distribution channels, including malicious or trojanized applications, games, software development kits embedded by app developers, fake Windows and Android software, and preinstalled malware on low-cost Android TV streaming devices. Once installed, the malware enrolls devices into the proxy network, relays traffic through residential connections, and can also direct infected devices to participate in distributed denial-of-service activity. The operation has marketed proxy access as a legitimate service while monetizing compromised devices and incentivizing developers to expand the network through SDK-based integrations. The actor demonstrates resilience and operational adaptability. After a January 2026 disruption by Google and partners, IPIDEA reportedly lost about a quarter of its victim base but rebuilt and exceeded its prior scale by July 2026, while shifting to new command-and-control infrastructure during the recovery period. IPIDEA is part of a broader ecosystem of interconnected malicious proxy providers in which operators may both run their own botnets and resell access to other compromised-device pools. Observed abuse of IPIDEA infrastructure includes concealment of attacker origin through residential IP space, support to fraud operations, and use of infected devices as a DDoS-capable botnet. The operation is associated with malware-enabled device enrollment, proxying of malicious traffic, and infrastructure management consistent with large-scale botnet-backed proxy services.
