RobbinHood is a human-operated ransomware threat actor associated with targeted big-game hunting intrusions against higher-value organizations. The group is known for deploying ransomware after hands-on-keyboard activity in compromised enterprise environments and for taking steps to inhibit recovery by deleting shadow copies. RobbinHood has also been publicly documented abusing a signed but vulnerable GIGABYTE motherboard driver, GDRV.SYS, in a Bring Your Own Vulnerable Driver (BYOVD) technique to disable Windows Driver Signature Enforcement and install a malicious kernel driver. Reported implementations modified code integrity settings differently across Windows versions, including tampering with code integrity variables on legacy and modern systems, a technique that can destabilize hosts protected by PatchGuard. RobbinHood is widely tracked as a ransomware operator rather than a nation-state actor.
