WrtHug is the name given to a suspected China state-linked operation involving the compromise of thousands of ASUS routers, particularly older end-of-life models. The activity is assessed as consistent with the construction of an operational relay box (ORB) network, in which hijacked edge devices are used as covert infrastructure to relay traffic, obscure operator identity, and support espionage-oriented operations. The campaign has been associated with large-scale router compromise rather than disruptive effects, and its publicly identified post-compromise objectives remain unclear. Reported victim-device concentrations indicate a strong presence in Taiwan, with additional affected devices observed in South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Russia, parts of central Europe, and the United States. The operation aligns with a broader pattern of Chinese state-linked tradecraft involving the abuse of vulnerable network infrastructure for reconnaissance, operational concealment, and follow-on access.
