Anubis is a ransomware-as-a-service operation active since late 2024 and associated with double-extortion intrusions that combine file encryption with data theft and public leak pressure. The group has been linked to an affiliate model launched in early 2025 and has targeted organizations across multiple sectors, including healthcare, manufacturing, financial services, retail, food production, and maritime infrastructure. Reported victims include U.S.-based healthcare providers, industrial manufacturers, retailers, and Fairlife, the Coca-Cola dairy subsidiary, as well as organizations in France, Great Britain, and Italy. Anubis has claimed intrusions that disrupted business operations as well as caused data breaches. In the Fairlife incident, the group publicly asserted that it encrypted systems, stole large volumes of data, set a leak deadline, and later published stolen material after failed or absent negotiations. Reporting also attributes to Anubis a leak site used for extortion and victim shaming. The operation has been described as using a wiper-mode capability that can permanently delete victim files and prevent recovery, increasing coercive pressure beyond standard ransomware encryption. The group has been associated with opportunistic exploitation of weakly secured environments, spear-phishing for initial access, abuse of exposed internet-facing systems, and exploitation of known but unpatched vulnerabilities in remote access and edge infrastructure. Post-compromise behavior has included lateral movement into core systems, data exfiltration, encryption, and extortion. Anubis has also been linked to attacks against maritime entities where intrusion activity was assessed to have spread through enterprise IT rather than operational technology, while still causing significant operational disruption. Anubis is reported to operate under a RaaS structure with revenue-sharing for affiliates and has been described as a rebrand of the earlier Sphinx ransomware. It is unrelated to the older Android banking malware also known as Anubis.
