LuoYu is a China-aligned cyber espionage threat actor associated with adversary-in-the-middle operations and long-running use of custom backdoors and shared Chinese intrusion tooling. The group is publicly linked to malware families including WinDealer, ReverseWindow, DinodasRAT (also known as XDealer), ShadowPad, and PlugX. LuoYu is also grouped with other PRC-linked actors that have demonstrated AitM capability, alongside clusters such as Evasive Panda and LittleBear. LuoYu is notable for operations that abuse network-position advantages or proxy infrastructure to deliver malware and support covert command-and-control. The actor has been associated with ReverseWindow activity and with DinodasRAT/XDealer, a cross-platform backdoor family with Windows and Linux variants that supports extensive remote administration, command execution, file operations, process and service control, proxying, reverse shell access, persistence, and artifact hiding on Linux through a filter module that suppresses selected command output. LuoYu-linked activity has also overlapped with ShadowPad infrastructure, reinforcing its placement within the broader Chinese espionage ecosystem. Observed tradecraft includes use of AitM-style delivery mechanisms, covert C2 infrastructure, persistence, post-exploitation tooling, and proxying through compromised edge or SOHO devices. LuoYu has been cited as an example of an advanced actor leveraging compromised SOHO devices as proxy infrastructure. The actor’s tooling and infrastructure patterns are consistent with intelligence collection rather than financially motivated crime.
