APT18 is a China-linked advanced persistent threat group associated with cyberespionage against U.S. organizations, including healthcare targets. It is also tracked as Wekby, Dynamite Panda, TG-0416, Threat Group-0416, Combine, Elderwood Group, Red Wraith, Satin Typhoon, Scandium, and SilverViper. The group uses legitimate credentials to access externally available remote services and the Windows command shell to execute commands on compromised systems. Its post-compromise capabilities include transferring files onto victim machines, enumerating directories, and collecting system information. It establishes persistence through user-level Windows Registry autostart mechanisms and deletes tools and batch scripts to remove operational artifacts. APT18 has deployed Pisloader, a variant of the HTTPBrowser remote-access trojan, against a U.S.-based organization. Pisloader uses DNS requests for command-and-control beaconing and receives commands through DNS TXT records. Its concealment techniques include string obfuscation, single-byte XOR transformations, and return-oriented programming to impede analysis. Other documented APT18 activity uses HTTP for command-and-control communications. The group has also exploited Adobe Flash Player vulnerability CVE-2015-5119 through exploit kits.
