AvosLocker is a ransomware-as-a-service operation first identified in 2021. It initially targeted Windows environments and later expanded to Linux, including dedicated encryptors for VMware ESXi infrastructure. The operation is associated with affiliate-based intrusion activity, data theft, victim shaming on leak sites, and partner recruitment through criminal channels. AvosLocker has used multiple initial access methods, including spam email campaigns and exploitation of Microsoft Exchange ProxyShell-related vulnerabilities such as CVE-2021-34473, CVE-2021-31206, CVE-2021-34523, and CVE-2021-31207. Reported post-compromise activity includes credential dumping with Mimikatz, Remote Desktop access, Active Directory and network resource access, and exfiltration of victim data prior to ransomware deployment. The Windows malware supports multithreaded encryption, mutex-based execution control, drive and network resource enumeration, and selective file and folder exclusions. The Linux/ESXi variant is an ELF encryptor that accepts runtime parameters, checks for ESXi and VMFS-related environments, and terminates running virtual machines before encrypting files. Across reporting, AvosLocker has been described as using strong hybrid encryption schemes and as appending family-specific extensions before dropping ransom notes. AvosLocker is also notable for defense-evasion tradecraft. It has been associated for years with abuse of Windows Safe Mode to impair endpoint protections before encryption, and it has also been cited among ransomware actors that leveraged bring-your-own-vulnerable-driver techniques to bypass or disable security tools. The group has additionally been linked to use of legitimate tools and services to support exfiltration and hands-on-keyboard operations. The operation follows an extortion model centered on stealing data and pressuring victims through leak-site publication when payment is refused. AvosLocker has advertised affiliate and partner programs and is widely tracked as a financially motivated criminal ransomware collective rather than a state-directed actor.
