UNK_FistBump is a China-aligned cyber-espionage threat cluster tracked separately from APT41/TA415 despite limited tooling overlap. It was observed targeting Taiwan’s semiconductor ecosystem in 2025, including semiconductor design, manufacturing, packaging, testing, and supply-chain organizations, with particular focus on recruitment and HR personnel. The activity is assessed as espionage-driven and aligns with broader Chinese strategic interest in semiconductor intelligence collection. The actor relies primarily on spear-phishing for initial access, especially employment-themed lures in which operators impersonate graduate students or job applicants. Campaigns have used compromised Taiwanese university email accounts to increase credibility. Observed delivery chains led to Cobalt Strike Beacon or a custom backdoor known as Voldemort. Intrusions have used password-protected archives, shortcut-based execution, and DLL sideloading to launch payloads. Voldemort has used Google Sheets as a command-and-control channel, while other observed chains established persistence and enabled follow-on post-compromise access. Proofpoint tracks UNK_FistBump as distinct from TA415/APT41 because of notable differences in malware loading and command-and-control tradecraft, even though Voldemort had previously been associated with TA415. The cluster forms part of a broader set of China-aligned operations targeting Taiwan’s semiconductor sector alongside UNK_DropPitch and UNK_SparkyCarp.
